Obama and Self-Identification Politics

Identity, Up Bring and Birth

It is obvious that President Barack Hussein Obama is not a sole member of any particular race or ethnic group. As an offspring of a father of African descent and mother of Scottish-American lineage, he reflects the obvious multiracial and multiethnic mix of the rising minority-majority. He is considered a leftist by his enemies on the right that mow encompasses the Republican Party agenda and vocal base. President Obama is considered too centrist or conservative by progressives on his left. Yet, based on the choices provided by “march-in- step” and “no-compromise” position of conservatives who dominate the Republicans, given a choice of “two-evils,” the lesser, centrist Democrats are preferred.

Self-identification politics has been pervasive from the inception of this nation. Race, ethnicity, and gender have been used to determine political access, suffrage, rights, who gets what from government, etc. Anglo-Americans have been the dominant group. The white males in this group solely reflect the founders, titans of industry, leaders of most businesses, politicians, public servants, and professionals, among others. Blacks, Latinos, and women as members of the emerging minority-majority are challenging this monopolization of leadership and power during the 21^st century. The barriers to exclude them based on race, ethnicity, and gender were made illegal by Civil Rights laws and decisions of the 50s and 60s. In addition, the rising migration (legal and illegal) of Hispanics coupled with choices by Anglo-American females to delay or reduce chances of birth or abort unwanted fetuses significantly reduced white hegemony and those seeking such privilege.

 Self-identification politics is in a period of reinforcing its ranks and strengthening its dominance over a rising minority-majority. Conservative politicians and supporters are forcing states to impose stringent immigration restrictions which racial profile and intimidate those that are naturalized citizens. They have pressured centrist Democrats to stringently enforce federal laws and arrest of illegal immigrants. The President’s own citizenship or birth has been repeatedly challenged regardless of documentation, to the contrary (See Image 1). Fox News and particularly Steven Doocy and Gretchen Carlson pushed the Insight.Com notion that Obama attended school at a Madrassa which teaches hatred of Westerners. Insight claimed that this notion was disclosed by the Clinton camp. The story was picked up conservative media figures and repeatedly reported on CNN Headline News and Fox News (Media Matters, 2011).
